Indian in UAE jailed for espionage

An Indian nationalist in the United Arab Emirates has been sentenced to ten years in jail followed by deportation for spying for a foreign country, according to local media reports on Thursday (March 23rd).

The Abu Dhabi Federal Appeals Court, found the man guilty and convicted him, identified as SSM, for giving out sensitive information about, movement of military ships at the Zayed Port in Abu Dhabi, where he worked as an employee.

The federal court ordered law enforcement to confiscate the accuser’s electronic equipment used in the crime, including laptop, cell phone, and a camera, the report said.

The accused will be deported back to India, after serving ten years in a UAE prison.

In another case, the federal court exonerated an Indian, who was charged with taking photos of sensitive buildings in Abu Dhabi.

In January 2016, the UAE Federal Supreme Court had sentenced an Indian nationalist, Manar Y Abbas, to five years in prison to be followed by deportation for spying for the Indian intelligence services.

A number of other expatriates have been convicted of espionage in the United Arab Emirates in recent few years, including Pakistanis and Qataris.
