According to a court verdict a driver, who caused an accident after driving under the influence of alcohol (which he consumed illegally) will be punished with 80 lashes and jailed for two months in prison.

An Abu Dhabi’s Federal Supreme Court had upheld earlier rulings by lower courts that handed down the sentenced to the Arab motorist after, he pleaded guilty of illegal consumption of alcohol despite being a Muslim.

The Federal court also sentenced him to two months prison statement for causing an accident that injured two other drivers, damaging of three other vehicles and damaging public property.

The accused and three other victims sustained minor injuries and were taken to hospital. The police later arrested the motorist, after they learned that he was driving recklessly under the influence of alcohol.

The Public Prosecution charged the Arab man with drinking alcohol, driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving, jumping the red lights, causing an accident that injured other people and damaging public property.

The Ajman Federal Court of if First Instance and the appellate court had sentenced the Arab man to 80 lashes and two months in prison and also ordered him to pay 50 Dirham as lawsuit fees

Motorist challenged the sentences at the top court, stressing that he was wrongly convicted. But, the court rejected his appeal and maintained earlier verdicts.
