Toyota recalls thousands of Hydrogen powered vehicles

According to reports Toyota is recalling thousands of its zero-emission fuel-cell vehicles that it had sold around the world after discovering an issue that can turn its systems off.

The automaker giants announced on Wednesday (Feb 15) that the recall would affect affect 2,800 hydrogen-powered Mirai vehicles that were manufactured between November 2014 and December 2016.

The hydrogen powered car ‘Mirai’ is the future of the cars. It is one of the first such vehicles to be sold commercially, it can travel up to 300miles just in one charge.

The car launch was seen as part of the company’s goal to replace the traditional petrol-powered cars.

Al-Futtaim Motors, which distributes Toyota cars in UAE, confirmed the recall.

A spokesperson for Toyota said in a statement that “In line with Toyota’s international protocol, Al-Futtaim Motors will be applying a software update to the three Mirai vehicles currently being tested on UAE roads as part of a pilot program.”

The process can reportedly take only about an hour.

The Toyota distributor kicked off in 2016 the pilot testing of the zero-emission hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai vehicles in the country.

The vehicle was also showcased at the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week to promote fuel cell vehicle technology for  a greener environment.

Toyota clarified that the recall of the cars will not have any kind of impact on car owners in the UAE, considering that only three new hydrogen powered vehicles are being used in the region for testing.

The company’s officials said that they are now conducting a customer satisfaction campaign that involves the Toyota Mirai. The public in the UAE is not affected by this campaign as the vehicles are not available for sale in the local market.”
