BMW Recalls Over 1 Million Cars Over Exhaust System Fire Risk October 23, 2018 11:44

German high-end carmaker BMW on Tuesday said that it would callback more than one million additional diesel cars, citing an issue with the exhaust system that "in extreme cases can cause a fire"."In some diesel vehicles, glycol cooling fluid can leak" from a faulty component called the exhaust gas recirculation cooler, which can combine with other substances in the system to create the fire risk, the group said.BMW said it was contacting sellers who would, in turn, get in touch with owners of the affected vehicles to arrange a checkup."The exhaust recirculation module will be checked and if there is a fault the parts will be exchanged," the group said.In August, BMW had announced a callback for Europe and some Asian countries of more than 480,000 vehicles affected by the similar problem and issued an apology in South Korea after around 30 cars caught fire there this year.It said on Tuesday that it had checked more diesel models and identified a "minimal risk" of fire in some of them. The latest callback brings the total number of cars affected to some 1.6 million around the world.Shares in BMW shed 1.4 percent to trade at 73.38 euros ($84.21) in Frankfurt by 11.45 a.m. (0945 GMT), against a DAX index of blue-chip German shares down 2.1 percent.-Sowmya Sangam

Anti-Muslim Campaigning in U.S. is a Losing Strategy: Report October 23, 2018 08:54

Ahead of the United States midterm elections on November 6, a report by the Muslim Advocates civil rights group slammed anti-Muslim campaigning strategies by Republican candidates and television channels as 'a losing strategy', Al-Jazeera reported. The 'Running on Hate' report charts the increase of 'anti-Muslim rhetoric' ever since the U.S. President Donald Trump assumed office on January 20, 2017.It documented 80 instances of "clear anti-Muslim rhetoric" hired by political candidates in 2017 and 2018, adding that 64 percent of the candidates held office before or enjoyed a presidential endorsement.Scott Simpson, the public advocacy director of Muslim Advocates, said that anti-Muslim candidates have competed for "every level of government" office in "every region" of the country in the past two years."Behind the worldview pushed by these candidates is something very troubling: Muslims and non-Muslim allies are conspiring to take over the government to replace the constitution with Sharia law," AJ quoted him as having said.Republicans comprised all but two of the 73 cases in which the report identified party affiliation, and more than a third of the candidates listed alleged that Muslims are innately violent or pose a physical threat."These conspiracy theories have had a constituency within the Republican Party for years," Simpson said, adding: "Trump is an important part of this, but he didn’t originate it." However, only 11 to 14 percent of the candidates listed in the report are forecast to win, therefore proving that targeting Muslims is an ineffective electoral strategy, Simpson observed."The vast majority of them are losing or are projected to lose in November," he said. "What we saw in this report, and what we see every day, is counter to the conventional wisdom about this: The assumption that most Americans don't like Muslims is incorrect." During the 2016 presidential elections, Trump promised to the public to ban Muslims from entering the U.S. and gave a suggestion of a database to keep track of Muslim Americans. The following year hate crimes targeting Muslims spiked by 15 percent, according to a Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) report.-Sowmya Sangam

Khashoggi Killed Within 7 Minutes of Entering Saudi Consulate: NYT October 23, 2018 04:49

Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was killed in Saudi Arabia consulate in Istanbul was attacked within two minutes after he entered it and was dead in seven minutes, the New York Times reported.A person close to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan revealed "new specificity to the Turkish claims about the speed with which Khashoggi was killed and said (that) it also showed premeditation".According to the daily, Khashoggi came under attack within two minutes of entering the consulate on October 2 and was dead within seven minutes and was dismembered in 22 minutes. Turkish officials have earlier said that the Saudi killer team had finished its work and left the consulate within less than two hours. The Times also said that Saudi agents who killed Khashoggi brought a body double who resembled the dissident and wore his clothes as part of a cover-up.Turkey leaked security camera video footage on Monday showing the look-alike strolling the streets of Istanbul soon after Khashoggi had been killed inside the Saudi consulate. "The inclusion of a body double in the squad is the latest indication that the death of Khashoggi, a Virginia resident, and Washington Post columnist last seen on October 2, occurred during a premeditated plot by the Saudis to abduct or kill him and hide what they did." On Saturday, Saudi Arabia's rulers admitted for the first time that their agents had killed Khashoggi. They said he was accidentally strangled during a brawl that broke out in the consulate as the Saudi agents tried to persuade him to return to the kingdom. The Saudi officials have also said that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the 33-year-old de facto ruler of the kingdom, had no knowledge of the mission and that he learned of the killing only two weeks later. But this theory is widely challenged. The Times quoted a source as saying that Khashoggi's body was rolled into a rug before handing it over.Although President Erdogan has promised to reveal a truth "in full nakedness" on Tuesday, the daily said he does not intend to disclose the specific evidence other officials have cited. "Some of that evidence may have been obtained through audio surveillance of the consulate in violation of international agreements… But he remains determined to try to assign the blame for the killing to the upper reaches of the Saudi royal court, as close as possible to the crown prince." In the meantime, Khashoggi's fiancé, Hatice Cengiz, has been placed under police protection, a Turkish official said. The step had been taken not because of any specific threat but because Cengiz, who was to marry Khashoggi the day after he went to the Saudi Consulate, had been the target of online abuse, the Times said.-Sowmya Sangam
