Sunil Gavaskar's Remark on Kapil Dev's Fitness

Everyone knows Sunil Gavaskar, the ex-India captain, doesn't like bowlers lifting heavy weights at the gym. He's said this before. Gavaskar thinks that when fast bowlers lift heavy weights, it's a big reason why they get back problems. He used past examples to support his idea, saying that bowlers in the old days got hurt less because they didn't do those gym workouts. Gavaskar recently talked again about how bowlers stayed fit back when he played, and it sounded like he was criticizing today's bowlers who focus a lot on weightlifting.

Someone asked Gavaskar on TV during the India vs England Test match, "How did fast bowlers like Kapil Dev and Javagal Srinath play so much cricket without good equipment, advanced methods, and recovery techniques?" Gavaskar answered directly, saying that bowlers back then did "what their job needed." He added, "How did they play? I believe their training was different."

He was always at the gym, constantly moving and practicing. He would bowl to several batters in the nets, then take his turn batting and bowling again. He was essentially doing what his job demanded: bowling repeatedly. This kept his bowling muscles and entire body prepared for bowling. He was an excellent athlete, capable of succeeding in any sport. He focused on practicing and playing cricket, as required by his profession, according to Gavaskar.

Fast bowler injuries are now a major issue in cricket, including for Indian players. Jasprit Bumrah, the team's best fast bowler, has had injury problems, leading the team to limit him to only three of the five Test matches in England. Mohammed Shami, another experienced Indian fast bowler, has also dealt with injuries. Promising young bowlers like Mayank Yadav and Umran Malik have also missed significant playing time due to injuries, and many others have faced similar problems.
